MURRELLS INLET, S.C.: March 1, 2016 – Waccamaw Community Foundation, a grantmaking institution dedicated to serving Horry and Georgetown Counties, today announced funding of $19,500 to 7 local nonprofits in its 1st Quarter Grant Cycle of 2016. Funds awarded were made possible through the Elsie Beavers Carver and E. Lois Carver Educational Fund and the Waccamaw Community Trust Fund.
Meet our 1st Quarter grantees:
Barnabas Horse Foundation – $2,500 in support of care for one therapy horse for one year. Barnabas’ mission is to provide equine-assisted therapy for individuals recovering from trauma and abuse.
Beautiful Places Alliance – $1,000 in support of a boardwalk at Huntington Beach State Park to protect the dunes. Beautiful Places Alliance is the fundraising arm for the South Carolina Park Service, funding educational exhibits, improving trails and removing historic buildings.
Caring and Sharing – $2,500 in support of purchasing food, utilities and other program necessities. Caring and Sharing is a local food pantry in Hemingway, serving people with disabilities and/or who are low-income in Georgetown, Williamsburg and some of Florence Counties.
Freedom Readers – $5,000 in support of operations. The organization’s mission is to improve the literacy of children from low-income communities through one-on-one tutoring, free books and an inspiring environment.
Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Conway/Horry County – $5,000 in support of scholarships and staff salaries for after school and summer programs in Conway. This organization provides skill building and healthy lifestyle programs for kids ages 5-15 from underserved communities.
Team First Book (First Book of Horry County) – $2,500 in support of purchasing 910 new books to expand access to literacy for more than 150 children. First Book’s goal is to provide new books to children in need, a critical aim when research has proven that access to books is the single greatest barrier affecting literacy development.
Winyah Rivers Foundation – $1,000 in support of the creation of a strategic plan. Winyah Rivers Foundation is a grassroots nonprofit of people from North and South Carolina concerned about the preservation of clean water in local rivers and watershed.
Grants from the Carver Educational Fund and the Waccamaw Community Trust Fund are awarded on a quarterly basis. Grants from the Carver Educational Fund range from $500 to $5,000 to “programs and projects that further the cause of education.” The Waccamaw Community Trust Fund awards grants in the amount of $500 to $2,500 to a variety of local nonprofits for projects related to their missions.
Last year, Waccamaw Community Foundation awarded $2.6 million in grants through 496 awards. 55 percent of grants were made in Horry and Georgetown Counties.
