Waccamaw Community Foundation Names New Board Members

Murrells Inlet, SC, (April 2011) — The Waccamaw Community Foundation welcomes three new Board Members.  Dr. Hal B. Holmes, Jr. of Conway ~ Mr. James Carson Benton, Jr. of Myrtle Beach and Dr. Muriel O’Tuel of North Myrtle Beach.

Dr. Holmes is a retired general surgeon.  He practiced general surgery in Conway for 18 years and during that time served as both Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff of the hospital. He is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Holmes received his undergraduate degree from The Citadel and his medical degree from MUSC.

Mr. Benton is a graduate of Clemson University. In addition to developing and owning Osprey Marina, he is co-owner and operator of C. L. Benton & Sons, Inc. ~ General Contractor and heavy excavating. C. L. Benton & Sons has been in business for more than 70 years and Mr. Benton has been with the company for 27 years.

Dr. O’Tuel is a highly acclaimed keynote speaker who inspires her listeners to leave positive footprints on the hearts of others.  Her book Footprints on the Heart was nominated for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Educator’s Award.  Dr. O’Tuel  is currently working on a second book entitled Heartprints are Forever, which deals with leaving a LEGACY of making a difference.  Dr. O’Tuel earned her BA degree in English from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in North Carolina; a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Alabama; and a Ph.D. in counselor education and psychology from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Holmes, Mr. Benton and Dr. O’Tuel join a Board that includes J. Robert Calliham, Chairman; G. David Bishop, Vice-Chairman; R. Thomas Harrell, Treasurer; John Draughn, Secretary; and Rev. Cheryl Adamson, Pamela (PJ) Browning, Frank Bullard, Kathryn (Kif) Cook, James P. Creel, Ruell Hicks, Scott Hutto, Allen Jeffcoat, Dennis Wade and Harold Stowe, Past Chairman.

The Waccamaw Community Foundation is a public foundation that was founded in 1999 and currently manages more than $18.5 million in charitable assets. The organization's mission is to rally philanthropic resources for the purpose of building a stronger community and a better quality of life for the people of the Waccamaw Region.
