WCF Awards & Appreciation Banquet a Huge Success
Annual Banquet a Big Success for Local community foundation
Murrells Inlet, SC, (June 26, 2008) —Nearly 200 people attended Waccamaw Community Foundation’s annual awards and appreciation banquet on June 5 at Dunes Golf & Beach Club. Sponsored by Smith, Sapp, Bookhout, Crumpler & Calliham, the event included several award presentations, as well as the recognition of numerous grant recipients and Foundation volunteers. Perhaps most memorable, thanks to an anonymous donor, every guest received a small bag filled with $10 in gold coins. Jonathan P. Kresken, Foundation President, then challenged everyone with matching that money and donating it to a worthy non-profit organization of their choice. John Trudeau, outgoing chair of Horry County Red Cross, challenged his entire board to match his “bag of gold.” Ultimately, that organization received $265.00 in donations from that simple act. If everyone who attended takes their money and matches it, local non-profits will receive donations totaling a good deal more than $3,500. “It was our hope that the “bag of gold” idea would convey the deeper significance of philanthropy,” said Kresken. “And we think it worked. We’ve received a great deal of feedback about how different attendees matched and – in many cases – exceeded their matching goal. A dozen or more nonprofits have received unexpected gifts as a result of the idea.”
The first Clyde W. Port Catalyst Award – a $1,000 annual grant – was awarded to the United Way of Horry County. Created in memory of Mr. Port, a founding member and Director Emeritus of Waccamaw Community Foundation, this fund supports an annual $1,000 award to a 501(c)3 designated organization in Horry or Georgetown counties that exemplifies an exceptional measure of vision, creativity, leadership and commitment in addressing critical community issues. The Waccamaw Community Trust grants for 2008 were awarded to Limos for Learning ($28,000), Miss Ruby’s Kids ($9,000) and Kids Empowerment CafĂ© ($6,000). The Trust is a permanent fund created by donations from area residents. The Waccamaw Community Foundation’s Young Professional Awards, sponsored this year by Smith, Sapp, Bookhout, Crumpler and Calliham, were presented to young professionals in recognition of their individual philanthropic and civic-minded endeavors. Recipients included: Lisa Hunter from North Myrtle Beach, Shannon Camp from Myrtle Beach, Nicole Hyman from Conway and Jenna Jordan from Georgetown. The Waccamaw Community Foundation is a public charity that was founded in 1999 and currently manages $20-plus million in charitable assets. The organization's mission is to rally philanthropic resources for the purpose of building a stronger Community and a better quality of life for the people of the Waccamaw Region. In 2007 alone, the Foundation disbursed over $1.5 million in grant money to 200-plus non-profit organizations. For information about Waccamaw Community Foundation call 843.357.4483(GIVE).
