Dr. Thurman W. Anderson Sr. Fund

April 07, 2009, Murrells Inlet, SC – Waccamaw Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Frank and Mary Watts have established the Dr. Thurman W. Anderson, Sr. Scholarship Fund. Mr. Watts, a retired banker now living in Spartanburg, expresses deep respect for Dr. Anderson: “He served for decades as the Superintendent of Education of Horry County and planted seeds that created opportunities for many – including great strides in establishing adult education.” In a nod to Dr. Anderson’s many contributions to adult education, this new fund was created to serve non-traditional adult students who are returning to school to study nursing as single parents. The fund is being administered by Waccamaw Community Foundation.
Dr. Richard Anderson, Dr. Anderson’s son, said: “Education was my father’s life … He believed everyone needed and deserved a good education. He was known throughout the county as a person who would assist anyone in finding scholarship or grants for college who otherwise may not have been able to further their education. This scholarship, graciously provided by Mr. Frank and Dr. Mary Watts, is a generous extension of the many efforts my father made to assist others in attending college.” The Waccamaw Community Foundation serves as a leader, catalyst and resource for philanthropy and seeks to improve quality of life in the greater Waccamaw area. The organization strives to encourage private giving and maximize community resources to benefit diverse areas including youth, families, arts, community development and more.
