BLUEGRASS ON THE WACCAMAW

Bluegrass on the Waccamaw

"Keeping the Music Alive!"
Bluegrass on the Waccamaw began about thirteen years ago (1996) as an idea between two friends.  Their thoughts were to provide a world-class Bluegrass Music Show and use the setting of an historic riverfront building in downtown Conway, S.C.  The ticket prices at major bluegrass festivals were out of reach for many families.  Therefore, the founders decided to make this program free to the public.  After quite a bit of thought and planning, this idea was put into effect.

On May 17th of 1997 the first "Bluegrass on the Waccamaw" festival was held.  Major bluegrass bands performed the first year and every year since then.

Along with the major bands, several local area bands have been featured each year.  The intent of the show is being fulfilled as more and more people drive long distances to attend.  These are fans who normally pay up to $600 per family to see the same talent in other areas.  The uniqueness of our area, coupled with the savings from free admission, allows for a longer stay and a positive economic impact for Conway and the Grand Strand.  It is the mission of this organization to keep these performances free to the public and to present both professional and local talent in a world-class setting.

As we promote the show, we also educate the public in the cultural art of bluegrass music.  We visit schools, civic clubs, and other organizations to enlighten our audiences as to the origin of and how this music has affected the American "melting pot".

In a more hands-on approach we hold public workshops for aspiring musicians and songwriters.  These events are hosted by award winning professionals at no cost to attend.  We also offer free lessons for beginners in hopes that they will be inspired and continue in their own musical pursuits.

The next step in the evolution of "Bluegrass on the Waccamaw" was to create a fund with the Waccamaw Community Foundation to support our festival annually in an effort to "keep the music alive".
