More than $38,000 awarded; next grant cycle accepting applications through July 8th
MURRELLS INLET, SC: June 8, 2016 – Waccamaw Community Foundation, a grantmaking institution dedicated to serving Horry and Georgetown Counties, today announced funding of $38,500 to 15 local nonprofits in its 2nd Quarter Competitive Grant Cycle of 2016. It was also announced that 1st Quarter grants across all WCF funds surpassed $186,000.
“It is an honor to support all of these nonprofits, who do such important work in the community,” said Edie Blakeslee, Regional Vice President at Coastal Community Foundation, of which Waccamaw Community Foundation is an affiliate. “A good number of grantees in this cycle are focusing on summertime, preparing to support children while they are out of school, so they can start off on a good foot for the next school year.”
Meet our 2nd Quarter grantees:
Bridgewater Academy Public Charter School: To purchase computers in order to increase personalized learning for students.
Camp Smiles: To support summer camp for children with Cerebral Palsy and Down syndrome.
Carolina Human Reinvestment: To support a summer enrichment program for students ages 12-17 who are considered at-risk youth or under probation supervision for nonviolent offenses in Georgetown County, a continuation of CHR’s afterschool program.
Each 1 Teach 1: To support the annual Summer Seminar Series to teach 25 at-risk Horry County students business skills to inspire careers in business, education and technology.
Ex-Cel Enchanted Learning: To purchase learning materials to use in the summer reading program for underserved youth in Georgetown County.
Family Justice Center of Georgetown: To purchase playground equipment to assist with evaluating children from families with a history of domestic violence.
Friends of Coastal South Carolina: To support delivery of environmental education programs for students in Horry and Georgetown counties.
Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina: To provide 70 memberships, two camperships for summer resident camp, two leader kits and five meeting signs.
Lowcountry Food Bank: To purchase 3,000 pounds of food for approximately 151 school pantry boxes at Loris Middle School.
Pee Dee Community Project: To support a 10-month math tutoring initiative and provide operational support.
SOS Health Care, Inc.: To support the Healthy Food Project, which educates parents and caregivers on the relationship between healthy food and neurological disorders.
Teach My People: To support the TMP summer program.
Teen Angels: To provide assistance to homeless and disadvantaged students in the North Myrtle Beach High School area through Teen Angel’s 100% volunteer run program.
Toomey’s Kids, Inc.: To support new classrooms of special needs children in Horry and Georgetown counties with funds for equipment, supplies, transportation and more.
Waccamaw American Leadership Forum: To support faculty cost associated with programming for next leadership class.
Grants from Waccamaw Community Foundation’s competitive program are awarded on a quarterly basis. Grants from the Carver Educational Fund range from $500 to $5,000 to “programs and projects that further the cause of education.” The Waccamaw Community Trust Fund awards grants in the amount of $500 to $2,500 to a variety of local nonprofits for projects related to their missions.

Last year, Waccamaw Community Foundation awarded $2.6 million in grants through 496 awards. 55 percent of grants were made in Horry and Georgetown Counties.
